Jim and Ginger Kutsch, now residents of Damariscotta, met at The Seeing Eye, the world’s oldest guide dog school in Morristown, NJ.

Jim Kutsch retired in 2019 from his work as President and CEO of The Seeing Eye. As a teenager in West Virginia, he lost his eyesight as the result of a backyard chemistry experiment. His doctoral studies at the University of Illinois included designing the first talking computer for blind computer users. Throughout his work in computer science, telecommunications, college teaching, leading The Seeing Eye, and in his lifelong ham radio hobby, Jim has campaigned to correct mis-impressions about blind people and has developed technology to enhance their lives.

Ginger Kutsch, blinded as a result of a rare genetic eye disorder that causes progressive vision loss, has spent a lifetime working in both the business and nonprofit worlds. She owned and operated a snack bar, taught food safety for the State of Maine, and worked in fundraising. After completing her master’s degree in public relations, she has been engaged in volunteer service as an access advocate for those who use guide dogs and currently serves as newsletter editor for the Pine Tree Guide Dog Users nonprofit organization.

Maine Mature Drivers Project (MMDP)

The MMDP presenta on strives to inform older adults and the professionals who serve them

(e.g., physicians) about how aging-related changes in health and func on may impact on driving safety, how the Maine BMV addresses medical-fitness-to-drive concerns, and how older drivers may self-regulate to remain safely behind the wheel OR make a smooth transi on into driving retirement.

I can plan to talk for 15-20 min and take questions for 10-15 min. I'll give an overview of what Town Planners do, my qualifications and education, and what is currently being worked on in Damariscotta and Newcastle. And I will try to make it as interesting as possible!

Our friend and neighbor Marty Helman will share what the life of a Trustee of The Rotary Foundation has been like.  She finishes a three year term on June 30th but on July 1st will take on the new responsibility of a Director of Rotary International.  This is a special opportunity to socialize with a long-term friend of our club as well as learn more about both Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation.

From homelessness to home.

Tedford Housing is a nonprofit organization based in Brunswick, Maine, dedicated to empowering individuals and families to move from homelessness to home. Through our comprehensive programs, we work to prevent homelessness, provide safe emergency housing, and offer long-term solutions. By offering support, resources, and stability, we help our neighbors transition to permanent housing, stabilizing our community one household at a time.
